GSM Point Tested Visas

General Skilled migration is for skilled candidates who are looking for permanent residency pathways to migrate to Australia. This is designed to meet the needs of industries facing shortage in skilled employees in Australia.
The very first step to proceed with these visas is to make an Expression of Interest (EOI) in Skill select program through which department select the suitable candidates based upon their point score, qualification and nominated occupations. The minimum point score needed is 65.

These visas are categorised into 3 categories:
  • 189- Skilled Independent visa
  • 190- Skilled Nominated Visa
  • 491- Skilled Work Regional 

189 - Skilled Independent Visa

This visa is permanent visa and an applicant need to be invited by the Department to lodge the visa. The nominated occupation needs to be on the Medium and long term list as advised by the for this visa. In this visa, applicant need to gather the point themselves which include age, qualification, employment, English language test scores, marital status and more factors.

190- Skilled Nominated Visa

This visa can be applied upon being nominated by a State or territory upon fulfilling their criteria. Each state work independently and make their own criteria that need to be fulfilled by the applicant to be invited. Applicants who cannot score enough points for 189- Skilled Independent visa usually explore this option. The nominated occupation can be either on long or short term list for this visa stream. This is a permanent residency visa as well.

491 - Skilled Work Regional

This visa is a 5 year provisional visa in which applicant has to live and work in designated regional areas. After fullfiling these conditions for at least three years, they can proceed to Permanent visa-191 meeting its eligibility criteria.
This visa has two streams:
State Nominated :
This visa can be applied upon being nominated by a State or territory upon fulfilling their criteria. Each state work independently and make their own criteria that need to be fulfilled by the applicant to be invited. The nominated occupation can be either on long or short term list for this visa stream.
Family Sponsored :
This visa can be applied if the applicant has an eligible relative residing in designated regional area. The nominated occupation need to be on the MLTSSL for eligible relative.
An eligible relative can be:
• a parent, a child or step-child
• a brother, sister, adoptive brother, adoptive sister, step-brother or step-sister
• an aunt, uncle, adoptive aunt, adoptive uncle, step-aunt or step-uncle
• a nephew, niece, adoptive nephew, adoptive niece, step-nephew or step-niece
• a grandparent, or a first cousin
Your sponsor must be:
• 18 years old or older
• usually resident in a designated area of Australia
• be an Australian citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen
• be your eligible relative or your partner’s eligible relative if your partner is also applying for this visa
